Thames Valley Fly Dressers

A Branch of the Fly Dressers' Guild

Fly Dressing Thursday 5th September 2024 at the Cherry Tree Inn

Summer is over, the nights are drawing in, children / grandchildren will soon be back to school - so you all must have time to restart fly tying….unless you are off for some September sunshine.

We restart Fly Tying sessions at The Cherry Tree Inn, Stoke Row, on Thursday 5th September at 19:15 - 21:30 and will continue on the first and last Thursday of each month until the first Thursday of May 2025.

This winter we will offer two different series of Fly Patterns & Techniques - Trout & Grayling flies led by Geoff, and Sea Trout & Salmon flies led by myself.

Entirely up to you - join a group, or tie your own flies for fishing, or just have a pint and a chat - your choice, all are welcome.

Trout Fly Tyers

Geoff will separately set out a programme of flies.

Salmon Fly Tying Group

This week we will tie Muddler head patterns - primarily for Sea Trout & Salmon in Lochs, but smaller ones equally good for Trout in rivers and Rainbow Trout in Reservoirs where they imitate Sedges in the evening.

John Watts Reservoir Fishing Competition

Held this year at Grafham Water due to the closure of Draycote. Other than Richard Ellis who had ‘bagged up’ by 2pm, we did not excel and came 7th out of 12 teams. Three of us just did not find the shoals of fish.

Surrey FDG Auction

I have heard that the Surrey Branch is planning an auction of Fly Tying & Fishing items in October 2024, however there is no firm information on the date yet. If anyone hears of any other auctions - please let me know, I have some surplus stuff to clear…

Fishing

Farmoor Reservoir has been fishing well, however a couple of weeks ago they stopped any Catch & Release fishing until the water temperature reduces.

British Fly Fair International (BFFI) 2025

Will be on Sat 8th & Sun 9th February 2025 at Staffordshire County Showground, Weston Road, Stafford. ST18 0BD, as usual.
