Thames Valley Fly Dressers

A Branch of the Fly Dressers' Guild

Fly Tying Session Thursday 5th October 2024

Our next Fly-Tying session is at The Cherry Tree Inn, Stoke Row, on Thursday 3rd October at 19:15 - 21:30.

Good to see the small group who braved the monsoon rain last Thursday.

The two groups of tyers had plenty of space to spread out in two rooms.

Trout Fly Tyers

Geoff is fishing.  He has left instructions to tie variants of the Pheasant Tail Nymph.

Salmon Fly Tying Group

This week we will continue to tie Muddlers - small ones are great for Rainbow Trout when they are chasing Sedges in the evening, larger ones are good for Sea Trout & Salmon in Lochs.

The draft programme up until Christmas is:

3 Oct: Various colours of Quick Muddlers (Dressings - PDF)
31 Oct: Skarra Monger variant (Dressing - PDF)
7 Nov: Clan Goat (or Clan Goat Muddler)
28 Nov: Blue Zulu
5 Dec: Goat's Toea
12 Dec: Mid Winter Dinner & Quiz?

We might be moving…

Unfortunately, the brewery Brakspear has increased the rental on the Pub and the publican has decided to move.  We do not know when or who might be the new publican.

In case we are no longer welcome, we (Charles) is checking out a couple of other locations.

No change at present - we still meet at The Cherry Tree Inn.

Food in the Pub

If you are looking for supper before fly tying - ensure you order by 18:45 - the kitchen is closing early at present.

Fishing

As the weather cools Farmoor Reservoir has been fishing well and Catch & Release fishing is permitted again.

The good news is that Severn Trent Water is in negotiation with a new Fishery operator and Draycote Reservoir is likely to reopen next March…

Tight lines for those fishing in Scotland next week and later in October.

British Fly Fair International (BFFI) 2025

Will be on Sat 8th & Sun 9th February 2025 at Staffordshire County Showground, Weston Road, Stafford. ST18 0BD, as usual.
