Thames Valley Fly Dressers

A Branch of the Fly Dressers' Guild

Fly Tying Session Thursday 26th March 2026

We meet for Fly Tying this Thursday 26th March at the Baskerville Arms in Shiplake at 19:00 – 21:30, as usual.

Programme

The programme this week is:

Trout and Grayling Group

John will demonstrate Wet Flies: Hot Head Damsel and Humongous (a great fly!). Dressings (PDF)

Sea Trout and Salmon Group

We suggest you tie Black and Yellow Tubes and Coneheads (Posh Tosh or classic Black and Yellow Tube)  – good for fishing most Scotland rivers in spring. Dressings (PDF)

End of Tying Season Dinner

We propose we have an End of Fly-Tying Season Dinner al fresco at the Baskerville Arms on Thu 7th May. (It should be a fine warm evening….)

Hopefully Charles can agree the date with the Pub and provisionally book for, say, 12 people and circulate the menu for pre-ordering (as he so efficiently does).

All - please let Charles know if you intend to join this dinner.

Casting Tuition and Practice

At the AGM, we discussed a Casting Instruction and Practice session at Barn Elms Trout Fishery on a Thursday evening maybe at the end of May.

Please can someone fix the date and make the arrangements for this evening.

River Dee, Llangollen Grayling Fishing weekend

At the AGM, there was a request to resurrect our Grayling fishing weekend in the River Dee at Llangollen in October 2026.

The last time we went in 2019, the contact at the Hands Hotel was the manager.  Peter's file notes say:

“Hand Hotel, Llangollen – contact Denise for ‘Anglers Rate’ on 01978 860 303

Central, good B&B rate at £45 per night single occupancy of double with bath / shower.  Full English breakfast included”

Please could someone take the lead this year and give Denise a ring and make a provisional booking for say 6 rooms?  Number to be confirmed by 1st August. Avoid the end October Half Term and avoid any Grayling Fishing Competitions.  Maybe Alex Adams could help.

Its snowing this week in Scotland – so some nice ‘spring’ fishing for the two Peters…
